"then a decent jam leading into one of the best intros to Saint Stephen"

Dude, you skipped right over the best part of show. This show lives in infamy for the Close Encounter Jam. I agree with you assesment of the rest of the show. certainly one of best shows in a year with very few great shows.

I've got to disagree with the statement that '78 had very few good shows. IMO '78 had a lot of GREAT shows. These are a few that should be checked out:
1/13/78 Santa Barbara
1/31/78 Chicago
4/12/78 Durham
4/16/78 Huntington
4/24/78 Normal (Anything but a "normal" show)
5/11/78 Springfield
6/4/78 Goleta
6/25/78 Eugene
7/8/78 Red Rocks
The whole "From Egypt With Love" run, 10/17,10/18,10/20,10/21,10/22/78 Winterland
12/30/78 UCLA
I would put these shows up with ANY shows from ANY year!

I actually said there were very few "great shows". You certainly list many great shows, however when compared to a list of great shows from nearby years, there's just not as many. I can list twice as many great shows from '77 or '79 or '80, etc.

Billy,

It's brilliance, in my opinion, is how it sets up the Saint Stephen. Other than that, not the highlight of the show for me.

When I first heard that transition I though there must have been a cut in the tape and it was spliced right at the beginning of St Stephen. Jerry was playing mostly by himself and then the whole band comes in with those first few notes of Stephen. After multiple listens with the headphones I finally convinced myself that it was just one of those great moments. The show at the Shrine on 1-11-78 has an equally great Stephen as well. It seems like they were finally perfecting a difficult song, and then it disappeared until December with a few more great versions (12-31-78 in one of all time greats)and you know the rest.
